Reference checking is an absolutely vital, though often overlooked, step in your job search process. It usually happens near the end of an application process, but that does not mean you should wait until the last minute to prepare for it.
To be clear on what it involves: reference checking is the process where a recruiter, hiring manager or decision-maker contacts the people you have nominated to help round out the picture of you as a candidate and confirm your suitability for a role. Handled well, it can genuinely strengthen your candidacy. Handled poorly, it can undo weeks of good impressions.
A few practical recommendations make a real difference. As early as possible, contact the people you plan to use as references and explain what you will need from them, especially if you have not been in touch for a while. Nobody wants an unexpected call from a recruiter years after you last spoke to them.
Choose the right people to nominate; the most valuable references are usually a former manager, a peer colleague, or someone who reported to you directly. Keep your references off your CV and out of the application itself until they are specifically requested; there is no need to share them prematurely.
Once you know a reference is about to be contacted, reach out to them immediately with context: details about the role, why you believe you were selected, and what they might want to emphasise in the conversation.
This is not about coaching them on what to say, but about making sure they have the information to speak accurately and confidently on your behalf. Finally, once a reference has had their conversation, follow up to thank them for their time. It is a small gesture that goes a long way in maintaining that relationship for the future.
