Open to Work, Open to Judgment?

October 18, 2026

That little green badge attracts plenty of opinions. Some see opportunity. Others see desperation. Everyone seems to have advice about whether you should wear it, or not.

But there’s a huge/important point missing from that conversation…and it matters more than the badge itself.

My take in this video. 👇

Anyone who has spent even a short time on LinkedIn has seen the green badge that can be added to a profile picture. It signals that the person behind the profile is an active job seeker. People hold all sorts of opinions about what that badge communicates, but the more useful question is how to make it work in your favour.

Start with the fact that almost everyone is on LinkedIn for a good reason, which means most of us are open to something. Some are looking for new clients, some want to connect with great professionals, some are employers keen to attract talent, and others are businesses hoping to build a customer base. So there is no shame in putting your hand up with a green badge.

What the badge does not mean is that you are open to wasting time. That message needs to come across clearly to everyone who approaches you. The green badge will bring a rise in connection requests, and it is fine to accept the ones that are valuable to you.

The key is to evaluate each one quickly. Does the recruiter, whether internal or from an agency, work in your profession, your industry, or even your region? If the request comes from a business, could you realistically work with them one day as a customer, a new vendor, or a partner? If the answer is yes, accept the connection.

This should not take hours. A quick but thoughtful call is all it needs. And remember that you have options when a request does not fit. You can unfollow, remove connections, block, or report accounts that offer you nothing.

Staying open to work is about being deliberate, not available to everyone. Whether you display the badge or not, protect your time and keep your network focused on the people and businesses that can genuinely move your career forward.
