Your JobSearch Journey: Wrapping it all up

September 2, 2025
Here’s something nobody tells you:

The job offer isn’t the end of the process, but the start of a final phase.

The way you manage these last steps can decide not only whether you get the role, but how you get it.

And too many candidates give up control right when it matters most.

Congratulations, you have made it through the interviews, the application process and the waiting, and you have an offer in hand. Before you relax completely, there are a few important things still worth your attention.

Start by evaluating your total compensation holistically rather than focusing solely on the upfront salary figure. Consider additional benefits, flexibility arrangements and long term career prospects with the organisation, particularly if growth within the company is part of your plans.

A slightly lower base salary attached to strong development opportunities and flexibility may serve you better long term than a marginally higher number with little room to grow. Just as importantly, stay engaged with the process all the way through to a signed and exchanged employment contract.

Offers can occasionally fall through between verbal acceptance and formal paperwork, so treat this stage with the same attention you gave the interviews. This includes organising your references promptly, confirming that reference checks are actually being completed in a timely manner, and obtaining any required documentation such as police checks where relevant to the role.

There are naturally many people involved in getting you to this point, from recruiters to hiring managers to HR teams managing onboarding logistics. Even so, it is worth remembering that you can, and should, remain as informed and in control of the process as possible right up until your first day. Ask questions if timelines slip. Follow up if you have not heard back on next steps within a reasonable window.

Getting an offer is a significant milestone, but the job search journey is not truly complete until every piece, compensation, contract and onboarding logistics, is properly closed out. A little diligence here protects the outcome you worked hard to secure.
