State of the Market July 2023
Even though the news might be pessimistic, ensure that you analyse the market for your own skills and geography
A question that comes up occasionally is why so much content shared here covers news about retrenchments, both locally in Australia and globally, across tech and non-tech industries alike, rather than sticking to lighter subject matter.
The alternative is usually to focus more on positive, upbeat content about job search, careers and recruitment instead, and to leave the harder news out of the conversation entirely.
There are at least four genuine reasons for deliberately choosing to share the tougher side of the market alongside the positive. First, and most importantly, being realistic matters more than feeling comfortable in the short term.
Approaching your own job search or career decisions with as much accurate information as possible about actual market conditions puts you in a genuinely stronger position than approaching it armed only with optimism and hope.
Second, organisations letting staff go in one part of the business are very often hiring in other parts of that very same business at the exact same time. Understanding how this flow of people happens within organisations, and how it might realistically connect to your own specific skills and experience, can surface genuine opportunities that a purely negative headline on its own would otherwise obscure entirely.
Third, when companies you are applying to have downsized their own internal recruitment teams, it is worth keeping firmly in mind that the remaining team is very likely carrying a proportionally heavier workload than before.
That context is genuinely useful when interpreting response times and communication delays during your own application process, rather than mistakenly assuming disinterest where there is simply less available capacity to respond quickly.
Finally, it is always worth asking openly and directly whether a recruitment agency involved in your application process has an existing, established relationship with the hiring organisation in question. In a tighter market especially, that existing relationship can be a genuinely critical factor in how smoothly and effectively your application actually moves through the process from start to finish.
